About Finstabils
We document real financial independence journeys with rigour, transparency, and respect for the people behind every story.
Why We Document Financial Independence
Financial independence is often discussed in abstract terms — percentages, ratios, and theoretical timelines. What is missing from most conversations is the human detail: the decisions made under uncertainty, the setbacks absorbed, the habits built over years.
Finstabils exists to fill that gap. We believe that rigorously documented real-world journeys are more instructive than any formula or projection tool. Each case study is a detailed record of one person or household's path from wherever they started to genuine financial independence.
We do not sell courses, memberships, or financial products. Every case study on this site is published for informational purposes only.
Research Rigour
We verify figures where possible and document our methodology on every study.
Editorial Independence
No sponsorships influence what we document or how we frame outcomes.
Subject Privacy
Subjects choose their level of disclosure and can remain fully anonymous.
Balanced Framing
We document failures and setbacks alongside successes without editorialising.
From a Research Project to a Living Archive
Finstabils began in 2016 as a side project by a small group of researchers interested in personal finance behaviour. We were frustrated by the lack of verifiable, detailed accounts of how financial independence was actually achieved outside of online anecdotes.
Our first five case studies were conducted over several months, each involving multiple interviews, document review, and iterative drafting. We published them quietly, expecting modest interest. Within a year, the collection had grown to thirty studies and we had received hundreds of requests to submit personal stories.
Today, the Finstabils archive contains over 120 case studies spanning 18 countries, income levels from below-average to high, and timelines from six to thirty years. The project remains entirely self-funded and editorially independent.
